What I Learned:

After completing my research on the effects women had on Protestant Orphans’ Homes I realized how much of a difference these women made to institutional care. Canadian POH were leaving behind old institutional care and were taking the initial step towards adopting scientific child care. These groups of women were one of the first to take part in an organization that helped children with a large amount of control. With this control they were able to run the institutions over men. My research made me realize that not all Orphan Homes followed the same religious based model  and in mid nineteenth century more institutions were beginning to work towards a new form of child care. As well as women became a major factor in this advancement. In the early 1900s institutions were mainly run by men, and they followed a specific religious mandate. Protestant homes offered an interesting anomaly to this idea. The lady managers were know to create a “family-like” feeling within the home, following their maternal instincts.

This research paper allowed me to take a deeper look into POH. The paper itself was enjoyable, being able to really embrace a topic and pick it a part made the project more interesting. After going through so may articles in the class, it made it easier to analyse the articles I chose. It was not necessarily easy at start, I struggled greatly with my intro. I was not sure how to properly write it out to create a good road map. Creating a road map is not always the easiest. Setting up the entire  paper is hard, as well as trying to fit in all the contextual info needed to explain more about the POH. Overall this paper was good, it allowed me to look further into a topic of my interest. I learned more about the history of social work, which I am going into. This paper was my first chance to do a research paper, and it gave me many helpful tips for my other classes.
