Protestant Orphans Homes (POH), what about them is so important? When first approaching this research project I was not sure what question I was going to ask. Trying to narrow down my topic had it’s difficulties. At first, after doing some research I noticed a trend in the articles I was reading. POH are much different than most institutional homes in the early 1900’s. I decided to approach my paper with the argument on how Protestant Orphans’ home differed from other homes in apprenticeship, daily operation, and management. I started writing my paper when I came across an article that focused on the impact Women f POH had on institutional care. After reading this article it came clear that this was a common assumption to made in all the articles I read about Protestant Orphans’ Homes. I then recreated my outline to focus on the influence of women on care within the home, women’s approach to apprenticeship, and how they impacted institutional care. This approach was much more interesting and created a much stronger overall argument. Without doing further research I would have not made this observation. This paper outlines that impact the women of POH had on institutional care, moving it towards more empathetic and pragmatic care.
