Reflection:

I had never done a Primary document analysis before, and it really brought new perspective to how I will further to study history. Normally I only read other people’s interpretations of documents, and now that I have experienced creating my own it has made me realize the importance of taking the opportunity to read the document yourself. What I discovered from the document is much different than the interpretations I was reading before. This makes a person question whether or not they can trust other interpretation or if they can trust their own. Thinking about it further it is not about whether one person’s interpretation is right, but rather if they were able to back it up with evidence. Without evidence there is no clear argument. This was not clear to me before, but now when researching I am looking for the historians interpretations that are backed up with supportive evidence.

1854 Third Annual Report:

The document analysis I wrote was on the 1854 third annual report of the Toronto Orphans’ Hoe and Female Aid Society. This report gave insight into how the home operated and the importance of community to the home. From my understanding this reports purpose was to explain how the home operated and throughout a strong connection to the community and the home became apparent. Throughout the document I was able to gather evidence that showed how both factors benefit one another, by helping the other prosper. This relationship is discussed thoroughly in my analysis.  primary-document-2
